Consumer Affairs says "Dob in a tradie"

Date: 21 November 2016

With demand for builders and tradespeople traditionally ramping up towards the end of the year, South Australia’s consumer watchdog has launched a new campaign aimed at protecting both consumers and the industry from unlicensed operators.

Consumer and Business Services is urging both consumers and the industry to ‘dob in an unlicensed tradie’.

While the vast majority of builders and tradespeople do the right thing, there are some unscrupulous operators who work without a licence and try to take advantage of vulnerable consumers – often overcharging and delivering shoddy results.

Unlicensed operators pose a risk not only to consumers but to the reputation of the sector as a whole.

CBS is keen to hear from anyone who knows of people working in the industry who either don’t have a licence or a working outside of their existing licence conditions.

To report an unlicensed tradesperson call CBS between 9am and 5pm on 131 882 or online at cbs.sa.gov.au/dob-in. Please be ready to provide evidence to support your claim – such as a business card, quotes, invoices, receipts, photos, social media posts, online or newspaper advertisements.
